The stamp looks clean in the editor. You download it, place it over an invoice, and a white rectangle suddenly covers the lines and text beneath it. Resizing the image only makes the box smaller. Cropping trims the outside edges but leaves white inside the circular mark.
That result usually points to a background problem, not a stamp-design problem. The exported image may be fully opaque, a white shape may be sitting behind the artwork, or the software receiving the file may have changed how transparency is displayed. Each cause needs a different fix.
This troubleshooting guide starts with the visible symptom, isolates the file from the document, and shows how to prepare a digital stamp that can sit cleanly over a page without a white panel around it.
Do not redraw the stamp until you know which stage introduced the background. Use the same file in two or three simple tests:
- Open the downloaded image in an image viewer that supports transparency.
- Place it on a dark slide or colored test page.
- Place it in a second document application if one is available.
If the white rectangle appears everywhere, it is probably part of the image. If it appears in only one application, the file may be correct and the placement workflow is the problem. If the box appears only after exporting or printing the document, inspect that finalization step.
This separation saves time. A correct transparent file does not need to be repeatedly edited because one document viewer renders it poorly. An opaque file will not become transparent merely because it is inserted into a different page.
Use a recognizable design for the test rather than an empty ring. A gives you both outside edges and enclosed spaces to inspect against contrasting backgrounds.
Many editors display transparent areas as a gray-and-white checkerboard. That pattern is an editing aid. It should not be drawn into the image, and seeing it on the canvas does not by itself prove the downloaded file preserved transparency.
PNG can store transparency through alpha information. In plain language, each pixel can carry both color and opacity. A pixel may be visible, invisible, or partly transparent around a softened edge. The current W3C PNG specification defines this alpha behavior, including fully transparent and fully opaque values.
The important word is can. A file with a .png extension is not automatically transparent. PNG also supports images with no alpha channel, in which case the entire rectangular canvas is opaque. A white canvas exported as PNG remains a white canvas.
Inspect the file on a colored background. You should see the page color around the stamp and through any intended open center. If you see a checkerboard in the downloaded image itself, it was baked into the artwork. If you see white, the export or source contains an opaque background.
The most common source-file problem is a white rectangle or artboard object behind the stamp. Designers sometimes add it temporarily to judge blue or red artwork, then forget to hide it before export.
Return to the editable design and inspect the layer stack. Look for items named background, page, canvas, artboard fill, paper, or rectangle. Hide the suspected object and confirm that the intended open areas reveal the editor's transparency indicator. Check inside letters, between border rings, and around the center symbol. A background can remain trapped in these spaces even after the outside edge is cropped.
Be careful with automatic background-removal tools. They often guess which light pixels should disappear. On an antialiased edge, that guess can erase pale design details or leave a rough fringe. A clean source export is preferable to removing white from a flattened image.
If the only available source is an opaque image, work at the highest available resolution and inspect the result at high zoom and at final size. Remove the background without cutting into the outer ring, then test the edge on both a dark and a light page. A result that looks acceptable on white can still carry a pale outline that becomes obvious on navy or gray.

Before downloading, review four points:
- the background is disabled rather than merely changed to white;
- no shadow, glow, or texture extends into an unintended rectangle;
- the stamp is not clipped by the canvas edge;
- the chosen output is the transparent version, not a preview image or screenshot.
Avoid screenshots. A screenshot captures whatever the screen displays, including the editor's background, page color, guides, and possibly the checkerboard itself. It also fixes the artwork at the screen's captured resolution. Use the tool's export or download function instead.
Name the file so its purpose is obvious, such as brand-stamp-transparent.png. If you also need a white-background preview, export it as a separate file with white-preview in the name. Clear naming prevents a colleague from inserting the wrong version later.

Sometimes the large white box is gone but a thin light outline remains around curves and letters. This halo usually comes from edge pixels that were blended against white before the background was removed. Those pixels are partly transparent but still carry a pale color.
Test the stamp on at least three backgrounds: white, middle gray, and a dark brand color. Zoom in to inspect the edge, then return to normal viewing size. A tiny amount of softening can be natural; a bright rim that changes the apparent weight of the border needs attention.
The cleanest repair is to export again from original artwork against transparency. If that source is unavailable, use an image editor that can refine edge colors as well as opacity. Do not solve a halo by shrinking or blurring the whole mark. That weakens small text and makes the border inconsistent.
Distressed stamp textures need extra care. Their scattered gaps should be genuinely transparent if the page is expected to show through. White flecks create a different effect and can turn a subtle worn texture into visible noise on a colored document.
A transparent PNG can be correct while the receiving workflow still produces an unwanted result. Some applications place images inside a frame with its own fill. Others display transparency correctly on screen but change the composition during PDF creation or printing.
Insert the file using the application's image command, not by copying a preview from a browser or chat window. Check the image-format settings for background, fill, shadow, border, and transparency adjustments. A white frame added by the document application can look identical to a background baked into the PNG.
Then perform a destination test:
- Put the stamp over a page area containing a pale line or colored block.
- Confirm that the page remains visible through the open areas.
- Export the document using the real delivery format.
- Reopen that exported file in a separate viewer.
- Print or rasterize one page if print is part of the workflow.
Confirm the path your document will actually follow instead of expecting every application to behave alike. The W3C PNG specification allows alpha compositing, while real software can still differ in how it processes or flattens the result.
If the stamp looks transparent in the document editor but gains a box in the PDF, the problem was introduced during export, conversion, or viewing. Start by opening the PDF in another viewer. A display artifact in one viewer should not trigger destructive edits to the source artwork.
If the box appears consistently, review PDF export settings related to transparency flattening, image compression, print compatibility, or archival modes. Make a one-page test with a single stamp before processing a long document. Compare the screen result with the printed or delivered requirement.
Avoid repeatedly converting the same image through screenshots, copy-and-paste, and low-quality exports. Each step makes the source harder to diagnose. Return to the approved transparent PNG, place it once, and generate a fresh PDF through the shortest reliable path.
For formal submissions, do not assume a clean overlay is an accepted signing or sealing method. A visual stamp image does not prove identity, consent, authorization, document integrity, or legal effect. Check the recipient's current requirements and obtain appropriate local guidance when the document has regulated, contractual, notarial, medical, financial, or government use.
Use this short check whenever a new digital stamp enters the team library:
- open the exported file outside the design tool;
- place it on light, middle, and dark backgrounds;
- confirm open centers and letter counters remain transparent;
- inspect outer edges for white or dark halos;
- verify that no checkerboard pattern is baked into the image;
- test the file in the real document application;
- export and reopen one final PDF or document sample;
- store the approved transparent file separately from previews;
- include
transparentand a version identifier in the filename; - retire screenshots and outdated opaque copies.

Why does my PNG still have a white background?
PNG supports transparency, but it does not require it. Your file may contain an opaque white canvas or a white object behind the stamp. Reopen it on a colored background and inspect the source layers and export settings.
Can I crop the white box away?
Cropping removes only the outer margins. It cannot remove white trapped inside a circular stamp, between letters, or around detailed edges. Those areas need actual transparency.
Why do I see a checkerboard after downloading?
