An address stamp prints a fixed block of contact details (usually a name, street address, and city, state and ZIP code) wherever you need it: on envelopes, return labels, parcels, invoices and forms. It replaces handwriting with one consistent impression that is easy to read. The templates on this page give you ready layouts that you can edit online and export as a digital image or as artwork for a physical self-inking stamp.
Address stamps show up in more places than the corner of an envelope:
- Return addresses on letters, bill payments, greeting cards and wedding or holiday mail
- Packages and mailers, so a parcel can come back if it cannot be delivered
- Small business paperwork, such as packing slips, invoices, receipts and order forms
- Office and school use, for example "Return to" marks on files, equipment or library items
- Digital documents, where a transparent address image is placed on PDFs, labels and letter templates
For a business, an address stamp also keeps details consistent. Everyone who sends mail or paperwork uses the same wording instead of their own version of the address.
Keep it to three or four lines:
- Name or business name
- Street address, including apartment, suite or unit number
- City, state and ZIP code, or the postal format used in your country
- Optional: one contact method, such as a phone number, email or website
A typical home layout reads "The Garcia Family / 214 Maple Avenue / Springfield, IL 62704". A business layout might add "Order questions: " as a fourth line. If you are tempted to add more, consider a separate logo stamp. Our article on has more layout ideas.
Rectangular stamps are the standard choice because an address is a block of straight lines. Size depends on where the stamp goes:
- Small, about 1.25 by 0.5 inches: gift tags, small cards and favor boxes, usually with two or three short lines.
- Standard, about 2 by 0.75 to 1 inch: the upper-left corner of a No. 10 business envelope and most letter mail.
- Large, about 2.5 to 3 inches wide: mailers, boxes and packaging, where the stamp has to be read at a distance.
Round and oval address stamps are popular for personal and wedding mail. The name or street curves around the edge, with a monogram, initial or small icon in the center. They look decorative, but each line has less room, so they work best with short addresses. For parcels, read our before choosing a small design.
- Choose a template with the right shape and number of lines, then set a standard size or enter custom dimensions.
- Replace the sample text with your address. Use straight text for rectangular layouts, and adjust the font, size, letter spacing and position so every line fits without crowding.
- On round templates, adjust the curved text so the name or street sits evenly around the ring, and keep the center element simple.
- Choose a border: single, double, triple, dashed, dotted or vintage. Many address stamps look cleanest with a single border or a simple line.
- Add a small logo or monogram if you want one. You can upload an SVG or PNG, or use built-in shapes such as stars and lines.
- Set the ink color. Black and navy are the most readable on envelopes; brand colors and the aging effect suit cards and packaging better than business mail.
If you would rather describe what you want, the drafts a layout from a short description, and you refine it in the same editor.
Designing and previewing are free; you pay only when you export, and a single export needs no account.
- PNG ($2.50): a transparent image at 1x, 3x or 10x for printable labels, letter templates and PDFs. Use 3x or 10x for print.
- PNG + SVG + EPS ($2.90): choose this to order a physical stamp. Send the SVG or EPS file to a stamp manufacturer of your choice with the impression size. SealsDigital designs the artwork; it does not manufacture stamps.
- All six formats ($3.50): PNG, JPG, SVG, EPS, PDF and DOCX, useful if you want the address block ready for Word letterhead.
If you manage addresses for several locations or clients, the unlimited plans ($15.90 per month, $119 per year or $299 lifetime) cover repeated exports, and a free account lets you save each version to My Library and update it later.
For letters, order forms or label sheets in PDF form, you can for free: upload the file, place your exported PNG, resize it and download the result. Files are processed in your browser and cleared about an hour after use. Keep the stamp clear of barcodes, postage areas and any delivery address already on the page.
If you order a physical address stamp, there are three common types:
- Traditional mount with a separate pad: inexpensive and lets you change ink colors, but slower to use.
- Self-inking: re-inks itself between impressions; the usual choice for regular household or office mail.
- Pre-inked: holds ink in the die and gives very sharp impressions, which suits detailed or decorative designs.
Store self-inking and pre-inked stamps with their covers on, away from heat, and re-ink them when impressions start to fade.
- Leaving out an apartment or suite number
- Using script fonts that are hard for people, and sorting machines, to read
- Choosing pale ink that disappears on brown kraft envelopes
- Fitting a long address into a small circle
- Keeping an old stamp in use after a move
Can I use an address stamp on packages?
Yes. Use a larger size and dark ink, and stamp a flat, dry area. On glossy or plastic surfaces, ask your stamp maker about ink that works on non-paper materials.
What happens if I move?
A physical stamp cannot be changed, so you will need a new one. The digital design is easy to update: edit the text in the editor and export again.
Which ink color is best for return addresses?
Black or navy. Both read clearly on white and kraft envelopes. Save brighter colors for cards and decorative mail.
Can I add a logo or monogram?
Yes. Upload an SVG or PNG, or use a built-in shape, and keep it small enough that the address stays the main element.
