Size, shape and ink for lawyer stamps

Legal documents get photocopied, scanned and filed for years, so plan for clarity rather than decoration.

Shape

Rectangles for personal and signature-block stamps; round or oval for a firm seal with the name on the arc.

Size

Personal advocate stamps are commonly 50 × 20 mm to 60 × 25 mm. Round firm stamps sit around 38 to 42 mm.

Ink color

Blue helps tell an original from a copy; black scans best for e-filing. Red suits CONFIDENTIAL and RECEIVED marks.

Font

A classic serif or plain sans-serif both work. Keep the enrolment number in clear digits at the same size as your name’s second line.

Symbols

Scales of justice are fine on a firm seal. Never use a national emblem, a court crest or a bar association logo you are not licensed to use.

Use your lawyer stamp responsibly

Use only your own name and enrolment number on the stamp, or the details of a firm that has authorized you. Bar councils and law societies regulate what stationery may say; in India, the Bar Council of India rules on advertising expect name plates and stationery to stay modest, without claims of specialization or past posts. A stamp does not replace your signature or the digital signature an e-filing portal may require.

Never imitate a court seal, a notary seal, a ministry stamp or a stamp issued by a bar association, such as the NBA stamp and seal that Nigerian lawyers obtain from the Nigerian Bar Association. Forging court orders, affidavits or certified documents is a crime. Frequently asked questions

What should an advocate stamp include?

Your name, "Advocate", your State Bar Council enrolment number and your chamber or office address. Keep it plain to stay within Bar Council of India rules on advertising.

Can I make my NBA stamp here?

No. In Nigeria the stamp and seal required on legal documents is issued by the Nigerian Bar Association. Use our editor for firm, received or confidential stamps only.

Can I add a "certified true copy" stamp?

Only where you are allowed to certify copies; many authorities accept certification only from a notary, a commissioner for oaths or the issuing office. For plain ORIGINAL or COPY marks, see our tips on copy stamp design.

Do US attorneys need a stamp?

Many US courts do not ask for one, but filings often must show your bar number; California, for example, requires it in the first-page caption. A firm stamp and a received stamp are still useful in the office.

I am also a notary. Can I design my notary seal?

Notary seals follow the rules of your commission. Read the notary stamp layout checks and confirm the format with your commissioning authority first.

Can I digitize my current rubber stamp?

Yes. Scan or photograph a clean impression and extract a stamp from a photo. For crisp letters, rebuild the wording in the editor afterward.

How much does a lawyer stamp cost?
